Creative Expression
Creativity is our natural birthright. Engaging in creative expression is a powerful way to foster self-discovery, healing and growth. You don't have to be an artist to be creative or to engage in expressive arts therapy. It’s as simple as using pastels, paint, movement and sound to express what in the moment is too confusing or overwhelming to express in words. The resulting image can offer a new way to “look at” or experience the situation.
In individual therapy we use drawing and movement to explore and understand aspects of your experience that seem overwhelming, confusing and difficult to express in words.
Expressions through color and imagery allow us to access another source of wisdom of body memory and of unconsciousness.
In a group setting, we explore a theme common to the human experience and learn about ourselves and discover our connection to others in the process. Often times, we leave with a visual and embodied sense of the discovered experience.
In therapy, the focus of creative expression is on the process of creating, more so than object that is created. Using creative expression (drawing, movement, guided imagery) we access a different channel to our innate wisdom than our thinking mind can access.
"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium, and will be lost" -Martha Graham
